Disability Support Leader

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking responsibility for the daily running of Children and Young Peoples services, ensuring safety, high quality, and appropriateness for attendees.
  • Acting as responsible person in charge of the scheme when the coordinator/manager is unavailable.
  • Leading sessions, monitoring children’s activities, and ensuring accurate sign-in/out procedures.
  • Building trusting relationships with children and young people to enhance service benefits.
  • Leading a team of play workers and volunteers, providing support and guidance.
  • Welcoming and supporting children upon arrival, fostering self-esteem and positive experiences.
  • Conducting care plans and risk assessments for children with additional needs.
  • Working with parents and families, ensuring accurate information and communication regarding incidents/accidents/issues.
  • Contributing to activity planning, ensuring accessibility for all children.
  • Offering free play and structured activities to meet diverse ages and needs.
  • Preparing session planning documents, including staff allocation, toileting records, staff logs, and lunch rotas.
  • Supervising the activity environment for safety and well-being.
  • Completing records for accidents, injuries, incidents, and administered medication.
  • Documenting childrens choices and gathering feedback.
  • Providing and supervising hygienic refreshments, considering dietary needs and allergies.
  • Setting up and packing resources neatly and reporting resource needs.
  • Administering first aid and medication, after appropriate training.
  • Providing personal care, ensuring privacy and dignity.
  • Receiving, checking, recording, and safely storing medication from parents/carers.
  • Assisting with moving and handling, including hoisting and mobility equipment, after training.
  • Providing support for children/adults with complex needs, ensuring care plans and behaviour plans are followed.
  • Supporting communication and sensory impairment needs.
  • Providing surveillance for children/adults, monitoring personal hygiene, behaviour, nutrition, sensory needs and reporting observations.
  • Accompanying and leading children/adults on trips, ensuring safety and support.
  • Providing annual leave cover for the Coordinator.
  • Supporting children/adults with eating and drinking, following care plans and guidelines.
  • Assisting children/adults to engage in activities.
  • Collaborating with the YMCA children and young peoples team to meet attendance targets.
  • Providing support with promotional tasks.
  • Being flexible to meet service needs, including covering sites aside from usual sites.
  • Attending staff meetings, training, and staff development events.

Skills and Expertise

  • Experience with children with disabilities or additional needs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships.
  • Leadership and team management skills.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Safety awareness and risk assessment skills.
  • First aid and medication administration (where necessary).
  • Understanding of relevant safeguarding and health & safety regulations.
