Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology

Key Responsibilities

  • Identifying pathogens causing disease through bacterial culture interpretation and serological analysis to aid infection diagnosis.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting automated laboratory systems (BacTAlert, Vitek2, MALDI-TOF, Vidas, Cobas 4800).
  • Providing technical advice to nurses, clinicians, and healthcare practitioners via phone.
  • Accurate inventory management.
  • Working on a 24/7 shift rota.
  • Effective verbal and written communication with qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Using information technology appropriately.
  • Reporting issues to the appropriate person.
  • Performing laboratory tests autonomously, understanding the scientific basis, and disease processes.
  • Utilizing the main laboratory computer system.
  • Directing junior staff on technical and work issues.

Skills and Expertise

  • Proven experience in NHS laboratory environment (preferred).
  • Computer literacy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Enthusiasm for providing high-quality patient care.
  • Understanding of Microbiology principles.
  • Analytical skills.

Job Facilities/Benefits

  • Full-time (37.5 hours per week) position with flexible hours (8am to 8pm), weekends, and bank holidays.
  • Part-time hours considered.
  • On-call service for urgent samples (after initial training).
  • Support from experienced staff throughout training.
