Specialist Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology
Key Responsibilities
- Identifying pathogens causing disease through bacterial culture interpretation and serological analysis to aid infection diagnosis.
- Maintaining and troubleshooting automated laboratory systems (BacTAlert, Vitek2, MALDI-TOF, Vidas, Cobas 4800).
- Providing technical advice to nurses, clinicians, and healthcare practitioners via phone.
- Accurate inventory management.
- Working on a 24/7 shift rota.
- Effective verbal and written communication with qualified and unqualified staff.
- Using information technology appropriately.
- Reporting issues to the appropriate person.
- Performing laboratory tests autonomously, understanding the scientific basis, and disease processes.
- Utilizing the main laboratory computer system.
- Directing junior staff on technical and work issues.
Skills and Expertise
- Proven experience in NHS laboratory environment (preferred).
- Computer literacy.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

- Enthusiasm for providing high-quality patient care.
- Understanding of Microbiology principles.

Job Facilities/Benefits
- Full-time (37.5 hours per week) position with flexible hours (8am to 8pm), weekends, and bank holidays.
- Part-time hours considered.
- On-call service for urgent samples (after initial training).
- Support from experienced staff throughout training.
