Learning Support Assistant – Hertfordshire

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing outstanding in and out of class support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
  • Implementing effective strategies to support diverse learning needs, tailored to individual Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), support plans, initial assessments, and individual targets.
  • Assisting teaching staff in delivering exceptional teaching and learning, including specialist assistive technology.
  • Interpreting instructions to support student understanding and address communication challenges.
  • Maintaining accurate departmental records and contributing to setting and monitoring individual targets, including EHCP outcome reviews.
  • Providing support with study skills, pastoral needs, and community access (1:1 or small groups).
  • Assisting with personal care, mobility, medication administration, and individual support for students with complex needs.
  • Supporting students with work experience opportunities, including liaison with students, employers, and the coordinator.
  • Adhering to confidentiality guidelines and college policies related to SEND, health and safety, equality, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and safeguarding.
  • Contributing to curriculum team work, attending events, and participating in course and department meetings.
  • Participating in training and professional development activities to stay updated on SEND practices.

Skills and Expertise

  • Experience working with vulnerable young people with SEND, including Neurodiversity and Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.
  • Commitment to improving opportunities for young people with SEND, particularly in independence, health, well-being, social inclusion, and work opportunities.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate others.
  • High levels of personal integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to adapt and develop creative methods to engage young people with a calm and positive approach.
  • Self-motivation and proactive approach to utilizing personal initiative within a structured framework.
  • Understanding of health and safety, equality and diversity, safeguarding, and SEND legislation (e.g., EHCPs).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and IT systems.
  • Proficiency in using assistive technology.
  • Level 2 or equivalent qualification in English and maths.
  • (Desirable) Level 2 qualification in learning support or related discipline.
  • (Desirable) Use of a car.

Salary: 13,683 15,187 (Actual) / 22,069.82 24,195 (FTE)

Job Type: Part-time, term-time only, permanent (0.62 fraction, 30 hours per week, 5 days a week for 34 weeks per year)
