School Caretaker

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining clean, safe, and secure school premises (buildings and grounds).
  • Cleaning, handy person activities, routine maintenance, and minor repairs.
  • Supervising school cleaning staff (some).
  • Promoting health and safety in schools.
  • Carrying out porterage duties (moving furniture and equipment).
  • Maintaining school premises, furniture, and fittings, reporting issues to the Head Teacher.
  • Carrying out small repairs and DIY projects.
  • Arranging larger repairs and obtaining contractor quotes.
  • Performing daily cleaning and ad-hoc duties (litter picking, waste disposal).
  • Handling emergency cleaning duties (gritting, spill clean-up).
  • Organizing an annual deep clean of various school areas.
  • Maintaining cleaning tools and products, including replacements and stock.
  • Maintaining school premises security as the key holder.
  • Locking/unlocking premises, including out-of-school hours.
  • Checking for locked windows, doors, gates, switched-off lights and appliances at the end of the school day.
  • Operating security alarm systems, reporting breaches, and responding to alarms/call-outs.
  • Conducting regular checks on CCTV, alarms, fire safety, security gates, and fencing, ensuring repairs.
  • Advising the Head Teacher on school security and safety.
  • Ensuring a safe working and learning environment following legislation.
  • Carrying out and recording regular health and safety checks (legionella, play equipment, hazards).
  • Providing safe access in cold weather.

Skills and Expertise

  • Previous caretaking experience in a school environment.
  • Building maintenance experience.
  • Security experience (including alarm systems).
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Basic DIY skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work with students with SEMH.
  • Full driving license and access to a car.
  • Willingness to travel between sites.

Job Facilities/Benefits

  • Basic Salary: 26,402
  • Contract: Full Time (38.5 hours per week)
