Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician – Greater London

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow relevant procedures for Medicines Management to deliver service safely and effectively.
  • Provide Medicines Management service to designated ward areas, working unsupervised in clinical areas.
  • Be accredited (or willing to obtain accreditation) to check prescriptions and maintain accreditation as a checking technician for the London Region scheme.
  • Obtain accurate medication histories for patients on admission.
  • Implement and maintain the Patients Own Drug (POD) scheme for designated areas.
  • Initiate supply of non-stock items for one-stop dispensing.
  • Counsel patients on medication use, addressing potential barriers like hearing or language issues.
  • Deal with queries, complex issues, and complaints from patients and staff.
  • Coordinate discharge medication, supporting patient discharge planning.
  • Participate in the audit of Medicines Management service.
  • Provide training for pharmacy staff on Medicines Management.
  • Participate in reciprocal cover arrangements across directorates.
  • Maintain high-quality data input of patient information.
  • Support the dispensary when required and perform final accuracy checks on prescriptions.
  • Accurately dispense and issue prescriptions, including controlled drugs, for various patient types.
  • Identify potential problems with medicine availability and seek suitable alternatives.
  • Ensure medication is dispensed to meet agreed delivery times.
  • Receive prescriptions from hospital staff and prioritize according to urgency.
  • Ensure patient exemption status is checked for accurate prescription fees.
  • Calculate prescription charges from outpatients and private patients.
  • Participate in organising the dispensary workload and improving efficiency.
  • Line-manage a designated rotational pharmacy technician, conducting performance appraisals.
  • Act as a section head for designated rotational technicians.
  • Participate in training new and junior staff, including inductions.
  • Act as an Educational Supervisor for pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians.
  • Maintain a written record of Continuing Personal Development (CPD).
  • Troubleshoot complex problems and maintain efficient systems within the dispensing process.
  • Participate in developing the extension of the Medicines Management scheme.
  • Participate in regular Medicines Management training sessions for nursing staff.
  • Liaise with nursing staff and patients to ensure service meets requirements.
  • Create, maintain and develop medicines management policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain a personal CPD portfolio, including delivering and attending internal training sessions and meetings.
  • Participate in the recruitment of technical staff.
  • Follow legal, ethical, professional, and employer codes of conduct.
  • Ensure all communication is responsive, inclusive, and focused on improvement.
  • Maintain a broad level of pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical knowledge.
  • Participate in education and training programmes to develop skills.
  • Be aware of and apply relevant legislation.
  • Practice in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
  • Participate in weekend working and shift working on a rotational basis.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required by the Head of Department.
