Advanced Critical Care Practitioner
Key Responsibilities
- Undertakes comprehensive clinical assessment of patient condition.
- Requests, performs, and interprets diagnostic tests (e.g., blood gases, pathology, medical imaging).
- Initiates and manages clinical treatment plans.
- Provides accurate and effective handovers.
- Undertakes invasive interventions within scope of practice (e.g., arterial, central venous, Vascaths, PICCs, midlines, peripheral venous, nasogastric, and urinary catheters).
- Undertakes advanced airway management, including drug-assisted endotracheal intubation.
- Initiates and adjusts mechanical ventilation and other respiratory support.
- Undertakes point-of-care ultrasound examinations (if trained and competent).
- Provides professional leadership and support within a multidisciplinary team.
- Critically analyses, evaluates, and synthesises information for patient assessment and management.
- Applies principles of diagnosis and clinical reasoning for clinical judgment and decision making.
- Applies theory to practice through clinical decision-making model.
- Initiates emergency treatment plans for unanticipated conditions.
- Undertakes inter- and intra-hospital transfers of level 2 and 3 patients.
- Understands professional accountability and legal frameworks for advanced practice.
- Applies principles of evidence-based practice to critically ill patient management.
- Prescribes medications as an Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (in accordance with HSC policy).
- Authorizes blood product administration (if qualified and authorized by HSC policy).
- Understands and performs clinical audit.
- Provides professional leadership and support within a multi-professional team.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient records.
- Core member of the Critical Care multidisciplinary team.
Skills and Expertise
- Uses specialist knowledge, leadership, and expertise to assess, plan, and implement critical care interventions.
- Recommends adjustments/amendments to treatment plans (in consultation with patients and team).
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge in critical care, affecting practice change and disseminating new knowledge.
- Interprets new knowledge to ensure practice alignment with current thinking.
- Demonstrates accountability for professional actions.
- Possesses theoretical and practical knowledge for high-standard job delivery.
- Maintains a professional portfolio for annual appraisal.
- Develops, organises, and contributes to teaching and training sessions.
- Completes additional training to fulfil role requirements.
- Maintains compliance with mandatory training.
- Participates in supervision and mentorship of students and trainees.
- Undertakes clinical supervision.
- Possesses UK Resuscitation Council Advanced Life Support Provider qualification.
- Demonstrates strong communication and relationship skills with patients and families.
- Communicates complex information effectively.
- Provides empathy and reassurance to patients and families.
- Supports Consultant Intensivists and other medical staff.
- Exchanges information with patients and staff.
- Makes direct referrals to other healthcare team members.
Knowledge, Training and Experience
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge in the specialist field.
Professional and Service Development Responsibilities
- Manages and prioritizes workload.
- Makes representation at meetings, providing feedback on clinical and professional issues impacting care and standards.
- Participates in service development.
- Writes protocols, guidelines, and procedures for own remit, impacting multidisciplinary team members.
- Develops and evaluates protocols, guidelines, and procedures.
- Liaises with the Consultant Intensivist and Senior Leaders.
- Contributes ideas and recommendations for service improvements.
- Complies with hospital policies and guidelines.
- Reports and removes faulty equipment.
- Participates in the clinical governance agenda.
- Participates in recruitment and selection criteria (if required).
Freedom to Act
- Exercises a high degree of autonomy and authority in making clinical decisions.
- Plans workload using organisational and national guidance, policies, and professional code of conduct.
- Prescribes medications within competence and in accordance with local policy (when qualified).
- Uses own initiative, acts independently, and takes appropriate actions.
