This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified and highly motivated individual to join our busy laboratory as a Senior Clinical Scientist.TheTransplantation Laboratory at Manchester Royal Infirmary supports regionalkidney, pancreas, islet, heart, lung, cornea and haemapoietic progenitor cell transplant programmes and HLA typing for disease diagnosis and management.
The post holderwill have specialist responsibilityfor the support the laboratory provides for Clinical services. Arequirement of the post is to participate in the out of hours’ on-call rota which supports the solid organ transplant programmes.Study towards higher qualifications and participation in research and innovation relevant to the needs of the service will be encouraged. A national interest in H&I affairs would be an advantage.
The main duties of the job are to:
– take responsibility, on a daily basis, for organising and planning own work activity and that of a small team.
– take a lead role in quality assurance and control.
– participate in laboratory activities involving training and supervision of scientific and administrative staff.
– take responsibility for a specialised aspect of the laboratory work.
– advise members of the multidisciplinary team on tests and test result interpretation.
– participate in unsupervised out-of-hours on-call duties.
– participate in a relevant CPD scheme.
– comply with relevant accreditation standards (UKAS ISO 15189:2012 and European Federation of Immunogenetics).

The main duties specialised to the post-holder will be in support of clinical services, technical duties, administrative responsibilities and managerial/training.
In Support of Clinical Services
– to supervise work performed by scientific staff.
– to liaise with clinicians and transplant co-ordinators at regular multidisciplinary team meetings, reviewing patient status
– to be responsible for the quality assurance of tests performed
– to initiate, interpret and authorise complex results with reference to a Consultant or Principal Clinical Scientist as appropriate
Technical Responsibilities
– to be a technical expert in a designated area of the laboratory, taking responsibility for it.
– to be responsible for troubleshooting, validation and authorisation of tests results obtained by other scientists with reference to senior staff as appropriate.
– to support the Consultant Clinical Scientists in management and co-ordination of clinical studies which accommodate technological advances, and improve academic understanding of the clinical service
Administrative Responsibilities
– to assist in the preparation of monthly workload figures and in the preparation of a quarterly audit report
– to liaise with consultants, transplant co-ordinators, clinical colleagues and external agencies supporting transplantation.
– to efficiently report results in the prescribed manner
– to participate in the departmental appraisal scheme as appraisee and qualified appraiser.
Managerial and Training
– to be a line manager and to supervise a designated team, ensuring that workload is distributed efficiently.
– to conduct performance appraisals for staff members under the post-holder’s line management responsibility
– to participate as a training manager at a local and a national level by reviewing and marking essays and case studies submitted as part of the BSHI or STP schemes.
– to participate in laboratory teaching commitments through tutorials and seminars to laboratory and clinical staff.
