Orthotist – Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital
Key Responsibilities
- Providing high-standard orthotic care to diverse patients with complex pathologies.
- Contributing to the development, improvement, and delivery of the orthotics service.
- Treating both inpatients and outpatients as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
- Performing thorough assessments of patients using advanced communication skills.
- Collaboratively identifying patient-centered goals.
- Utilizing measurement and data acquisition techniques for accurate patient prescriptions.
- Performing positive model rectifications as required.
- Conducting risk assessments for customized devices to ensure patient safety.
- Evaluating completed devices for body-device interface, functional alignment, comfort, cosmetic appearance, and mechanical integrity.
- Managing own caseload autonomously and without direct supervision.
- Maintaining comprehensive patient records according to professional standards and departmental procedures.
- Liaising with other members of the MDT and external organisations for optimal patient care.
- Promoting the orthotist role through evidence-based audit and research.
- Making recommendations to the clinical lead/manager for practice improvements.
- Supervising students and contributing to the smooth running of the orthotics service.
- Participating in the staff appraisal scheme and personal development programs.
- Collecting data for service audit and research projects (under direction).
- Managing and undertaking research into clinical practice and service delivery (under direction).
- Maintaining, developing, and recording continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
- Contributing to the team’s learning and development through in-service training.
- Assisting junior staff with developing individual performance objectives (IPR).
- Assisting senior staff in presenting educational sessions to the MDT.
- Sharing good practice with all staff levels.
- Discussing complex cases and queries with peers and senior staff.
- Supporting the work experience programme for students.
- Adhering to all RNOH policies and procedures.
- Actively participating in professional and departmental duties.
Skills and Expertise
- Graduate in Prosthetics and Orthotics (University of Salford or University of Strathclyde)
- Diploma from Orthotic and Prosthetic Training and Educational Council or Training Council for Orthotists
- HCPC registration
- Membership of BAPO (preferred)
- Experience in foot, ankle, and lower limb pathologies (desired)
- Advanced communication skills
- Multi-disciplinary teamwork skills
- Assessment and management of complex MSK conditions
- Research and audit skills
- Proficient in measurement and data acquisition techniques
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Experience in orthotic device fabrication and design (preferred)
